I hate that I’m in the position where I’m rooting for an entire sector to fail, but here I am anyway, wanting this to go bust so we can focus on machine learning and leave the generative AI scam behind.

As a 30-year veteran of the software industry I could not agree more. The AI bubble cannot go tits up quickly enough. There is so much real work we could be doing if genAI had not cannibalized the entire field.
The longer the bubble grows, the more people it will hurt when it inevitably pops.
Completely agree, there is so much untapped opportunity in machine learning. All the productivity gains that we want can be achieved with out generative AI.
I was saying almost this exact thing to a friend the other day. I hate that this genAI scam has muddied the waters around/taken focus away from actual legitimate and helpful uses.

Generative AI is the best search utility we have right now. The market for it might fail, and we'll all be better off if it does because we aren't ready for it yet, but it's still useful to those with the skills to use it, despite the misunderstandings and misrepresentations of AI in the media.
