I know the public aren't keen on Labour either. But I'm trying to think about a comparison to describe the derision each party receives. Labour looks like a guy with mustard on his tie, but the Tories still look like a guy who's shat his pants.

I'm not saying some of this doesn't have a bearing on where Starmer's premiership goes next - it's just the portentous way it's written. Years of reporting on Johnson and Truss has made Westminster write portentous guff about office sniping.

Yeah but isn’t that like watching The Wire and complaining that Dominic West always has that resting “fancy a shag” face? It’s sort of baked into the premise of the show. I don’t disagree with you but it’s sort of priced in?

Also the stuff about how a country with minimal concept of the rule of law struggles to build a robust constitutional democracy has been discussed by historians like Timothy Snyder in writings on Putin and the rise of an oligarchy

I think that’s post Sorkin. I don’t remember it as a preachy episode and there’s some stuff in there about precisely why the US constitution wouldn’t work in another country?

Random question because I loved your parting New Statesman article about how you wrote Morning Call. What’s your best time of day and type of music for writing something that has to go out even when you might not be in the zone so to speak?
