A reminder that the challenges of public commemoration are ultimately political challenges - what do we choose to remember? why? how? It's easy to see politics and power at work today. They were just as much at work 100 years ago, though that is harder for some people to acknowledge or even see.

What happens when I listen to two episodes of @ifbookspod.bsky.social back-to-back on my drive home? I have a dream that Amy Chua is giving me a tour of her house, a la Eric Adams. 😬😂

Come find me in Newcastle, or online, to hear about my current research into postwar Marseille, industrial pollution, urban development, and petrochemical toxicity. Total downer of a topic, but I promise to tell jokes (badly).

Just finished reading Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead (would recommend), and it's the first time I've seen an author thank Scrivener in the acknowledgements!

I started fundraising for the Ida B Wells Monument in 2018. The monument was designed by the great Richard Hunt and dedicated in 2021. Last week, I finally saw the monument in person. I was unexpectedly overcome and I haven't found words to express myself. Ida truly deserves this recognition.

A large, abstract bronze sculpture stands in an outdoor park setting. The sculpture is composed of three tall, textured, spire-like pillars supporting an intricate, swirling design at the top. Trees, a lamppost, and a pathway are visible in the background under a partly cloudy sky. This is a monument dedicated to Ida B Wells in Chicago.
A plaque dedicated to Ida B. Wells-Barnett. It provides a brief biography, highlighting her roles as a teacher, journalist, anti-lynching crusader, women's rights activist, and civil rights pioneer. The text covers her birth, achievements, and contributions to civil rights.
