I dunno, it seems like it should be a bigger story that swaths of the USA are functionally ungovernable due to aggressive and heavily armed right wing militias? But most people seem to prefer to ignore it? It’s weird!
They need to call out the National Guard in these areas to guard these FEMA contractors. Backing down only emboldens them. Not to mention the people aren’t getting the help they need.
This is kinda of just a thing really deep in the sticks unfortunately. Not necessarily militia related. I have a friend who does a lot of charity work in deeply rural areas, and they often just can't go to places because people are so suspicious of outsiders.
People forget the FEMA has been a right wing fever swamp target for years. Back in 2015 during the Jade Helm insanity they were convinced FEMA was going to be the main player in some kind of socialist takeover.
I would at least argue that this type of militia is not necessary to the security of a free state.
The thing is there's not much you can do about it without opening a giant can of worms.
Violent gangs have taken over your suburb!! Where's the militarized PD when you need it?!

A version of this happened in Colorado during the devastating floods of 2013. Folks gathered to distribute supplies to their neighbors when armed dudes in pick up trucks showed up and “volunteered” to “keep the peace.” The people couldn’t do much and waited them out. But this isn’t quirky! It’s bad!
