What Ta-Nehisi Coates is doing, using his standing in the liberal mainstream to enter rarefied mainstream spaces to speak out on behalf of Palestinians, even though those spaces will be invariably hostile and even perhaps subsequently foreclosed to him, is incredible

Anyone who’s written - or edited others’ writing - on complex topics knows that clarity of ideas & concepts matters more than anything. Most bad writing is a result of disproportionate effort into *sounding* good.

Angola’s finance minister earlier this month demonstrating new strategic non-alignment: China, Europe, US need to show up financially if they want us to buy their stuff; and we prefer FDI rather than more debt. www.reuters.com/markets/ango...

The cyclist didn't just die. He was hit and killed. He didn't crash on his own. He was hit. I'm once again begging journalists to correctly describe crashes where drivers kill cyclists.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —
A bicyclist died Monday evening following a crash on Memorial Drive in Cambridge near the Boston University Boathouse.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m. Monday on the 600 block of Memorial Drive, prompting a response from both the Cambridge Police Department and Massachusetts State Police.

How nerdy are we trying to get on Bsky? I am discovering that people fit heavy-tailed distributions (e.g. Gamma) to gridded datasets to estimate likelihood and return times of extreme events 😬 www.drought.gov/data-maps-to... standardized-precipitation-index-spi-nclimgrid-monthly This is risky 1/

The US Gridded Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is derived from the nClimGrid-Monthly dataset and includes timescales of 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 months.

This should be bigger news: AI is *revitalizing the fossil fuels industry.* Bloomberg called it a "surprising resurgence" in gas-fired power plants when we were on the brink of a transition to clean energy. And big tech has nothing to say about it. www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/ai-is-revi...

Silicon Valley is helping to accelerate the climate crisis in at least 3 major ways
