Having a realistic shot at in-home care improves everything. No stress about finding a facility, moving and downsizing, maybe even putting a home up for sale, plus those with dementia aren’t further thrown off by changes in surroundings and caregivers too. All that takes a toll — on them & you.

I suspect the entire industry dedicated to hiding assets from the government to enable upper middle-class families to qualify for Medicare isn't going to like this proposal much.

That would have been the greatest thing for my parents. I had to move them away from the home they lived in for 55 years. My dad could have spent his last few years in a place that was completely familiar to him.

It’s a great idea, but even if Harris wins, the Dems are almost certain to lose the Senate, which means all her big plans would be DOA or at least on hold until 2027.

Medicare approval is a two edged sword though. It will more than double the cost of ALL in-home care for, importantly those who are not Medicare eligible. It will severely limit those who may provide care. In-home care providers will be regulated and then scooped up by private equity groups.

My husband is disabled, and we will likely have to get a divorce and he may have to move out if he needs more care than we can get through my insurance (or eventually, Medicare). Otherwise we will have to sell everything to pay for his care (thereby destroying my retirement in the process).

I think many of us can relay stories of the anguish in caring for elderly parents. This would be beneficial for a great deal of the population but we need Congress to enact a change to Medicare, and, like so many other popular proposals, we just know Congress will support it.

I had to put my mother in a home a few years ago since it became very unsafe for her at home and I had a full time job and a toddler at the time so I had no choice. She went downhill quickly. She couldn’t remember my name but would ask about “the house” constantly. Bleak days.

This has been my wife’s family since December. This would’ve changed a lot of what they’ve done thus far.
