Want to learn about the current literature on definitions, methods of measurement, predictors, effects, and the ethical challenges surrounding #ConspiracyTheories@lenafrescamente.bsky.socialosf.io/preprints/os...

A screenshot of an abstract for the linked chapter that reads:

Conspiracy theories are a social phenomenon that has been researched by several academic fields: From philosophy, historical and cultural science, to psychological research, conspiracy theories are and have been a topic of interest for many scholars. Taking a political communication perspective, this entry outlines the different approaches to define conspiracy theories and summarizes the current literature on the effects of conspiracy thinking on society. As the phenomenon of conspiracy theories is nowadays deeply connected to the networked dynamic of the social web, we also illustrate how conspiracy theories are spread, staged, and combatted in a digital, network media landscape.

THIS IS A HUGE ACHIEVEMENT: The EU now generates more electricity from wind and solar than from fossil fuels. Graph from Nat Bullard and data from Ember.

Sure, passive measures of media exposure (tracking, logging, ...) are great and all, but in the end, we will continue using surveys in (political) communication research. If you need a "scientific citation" for this obvious truth, there is now this encyclopedia entry: doi.org/10.31219/osf...

Screenshot of abstract: Self-reported media exposure
Marko Bachl, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, marko.bachl@fu-berlin.de
This entry is about the use of self-reports to measure media exposure in political communication
research. Self-reported media exposure means that participants provide information
about their own media consumption. Such measures have important limitations, such as their
low accuracy, reliability, and validity. These limitations can affect empirical results by blurring
and biasing estimates, thereby restricting our ability to learn about political media use
and media effects. The entry introduces remedies, such as improved question formats, and alternatives,
such as passive measures. It concludes with a defense of using self-reported media
exposure in political communication research based on pragmatic reasons (i.e., surveys will
be conducted anyways, so why not include media exposure measures), limitations of the alternatives
(i.e., costs, participant ...)
