It’s a “crewed” space mission, not “manned.” Someone can be “chair” rather than “chairwoman” or “chairman.” Avoid gendered descriptions like "hysterical." (10/n)
This is tricky. The term crew has existed for hundreds of years and referred to ships. Crews were usually men so crew has a male connotation
Ambivalent means 'strong feelings both ways'... Not 'I don't care either way'. And decadent means in decline or decay. (could be inadvertently appropriate in many cases... Eg wealthy westerners enjoying their dessert)
If you’re writing about research, say it comes from a lab in Japan / Australia / Finland / Chile / etc. rather than calling the researchers Japanese / Australian / Finnish / Chilean / etc. Most research worth covering comes from a lab with multiple nationalities. (11/n)
I feel this is linked also to your post about seminal and spawn. Both good thoughts.
You can't "refute" something by simply saying its not true.
I call my congressional representative my congresscritter, but I haven't told him that.
Thanks for this list. I looked up the etymology of hysterical and holy sh*t!!!
“staffed” might also work in some cases as a substitute for “manned”
Also avoid 'maiden' flights of aircraft and spacecraft. You can just say 'first'
What about “patriarchy”?
