It fascinates me how irate some gay men get over LGBTQ people using the term Queer to identify themselves. I personally use gay. I don’t care what someone uses on themselves. I only care if people are derogatory. Plus acting like Queer hasn’t been used by the community for Decades? Will & Grace? QAF
I think it’s important to understand that for many gay men and women, particularly older ones, the word has terrible, violent history. It’s not just people shaking their fists and yelling for the youth to get off their lawn. For some there is serious trauma attached.
I reclaimed queer for myself and occasionally for the community. No umbrella term is perfect and LGBTQIA is hard to say every time
I’m running a festival this month that uses the word Queer in it and have been surprised by how little resistance I’ve had to it. Maybe I don’t hang around with the grumpy gay crowd 😝
I'm not sure if referencing Eric McCormack helps here. The people who take issue with queer, are quite likely to also take issue with a straight guy playing a gay character.
Many hate it as they are transphobic and ignoring history and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, I’ve lost track of how many transphobic gay sellouts hate the word queer It’s understandable to hate it because you associate it with bullying and bigotry
