If true, this suggestion that Labour MPs have been told not to table any amendments to Bills is both concerning and stupid. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Exclusive: Private message from whips aims to crack down on dissent, telling MPs to speak with ‘one voice’
MPs have two principal roles: as legislators and to hold the Government to account. The arrogance of any Government in assuming that its legislation cannot be improved by backbench MPs is remarkable.
Actually, if something isn't done to halt loony Policy making by Labour lawmakers, then there won't be anything left of Britain. Starmer needs to go!
'If true' is doing a LOT of heavy lifting here.
Both stupid and signalling an authoritarian streak.
Sounds a bit - well - authoritarian.
I don’t understand why anyone is surprised by this. Labour top table seems far removed from membership and most of its MPs
Also I think it makes them look weak, you have a huge majority you can't be worried about getting things passed? Or is the leadership worried that yes they are that incompetent?
It feels like a very corporate approach to government…essentially saying to MPs “you work for Labour inc. you are contracted not to express any opinion but the company opinion”
This is only what happens already, with every Gov't. The sheep will do as they're told by whips. The dissatisfied will rebel, and with a massive majority they will feel free to make their "principled stand" more frequently to raise their profile above nonentity status. Twas ever thus.
A government can't control every voice . Eventually any mp worth his/her salt will rebel if they disagree!
