So much of Geosciences is what if you had the AP version of kindergarten as an adult; learn all these new words, and rock names, and fossils and do some coloring and think about your place in the world and time and learn how to solve some logic puzzles then go outside and hit stuff with a hammer

Second this. I *do* recall, though, there was considerable risk of a catastrophic flood to Bend from a debris-dammed glacial lake up on one of the Sisters. There was a remediation plan, but I don't recall if it was ever implemented.

Not gonna swear to it, but I *think* California requires HS earth science to be at least available, if not required. CC @phaneritic.bsky.social@xenolith.bsky.social. Also, many states require 7th or 8th grade earth science- 7th for me in Ohio, 71-72. Also took HS level in 74-75.

I think if you behead a tenured professor and yell THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE you get their tenure. Unfortunately you also get their backlog of work to grade, unpublished papers stuck in peer review hell, and grant proposals to write, so it’s an unpopular option

I *think* (but not certain) volcanojess.bsky.social ran for US House from CA a few years ago. Didn't win.

That is completely true. We’ve baked our vulnerability into our systems as we determined building codes, designed infrastructure, allocated water, drew geopolitical boundaries, and established cities that are all designed for a planet that no longer exists.
