I've launched a petition to abolish the Downs Act 1861 which gives the Society of Merchant Venturers a share of the management of the Downs. The management of parks and public spaces should be down to the people and their elected representatives, not wealthy business elites. chng.it/DsNWNdhrnV

A book must be an axe for the frozen sea within us - Kafka. (My cartoon for today’s Guardian books.)

Panel one:
"A book must be an axe for the frozen sea within us." says Franz Kafka.
He looks solemn, and holds up a finger to show that he is serious.

Panel two:
The publishers across the table say "That's all very well, Franz. But we commissioned a board book for toddlers".

Panel three:
"And here it is!" Kafka answers proudly, holding up a colourful book. It is titled "Choppy Helps out" and shows a cute axe with a friendly face (presumably Choppy) and his friend, a frozen, smiling sea.

note: Herr Kafka gave me the manuscript for "Choppy Helps Out!" on the undertanding that I destroyed it after his death. I could not bring myself to do so. If you are a publisher and interested in purchasing the rights, please contact me via my website.

Shortbread: the platonic ideal of a biscuit, one of the finest achievements of the Scottish Enlightenment .

Homemade shortbread supplied by a colleague's supremely talented wife.

Like many things in the UK it's only imagined to be a problem because there's a whole class of people who seem to think the median wage is like £100k a year and therefore objectively very well-paid national elected officials are actually somehow subjected to punishing financial hardship

In 1971, my dad, John Blankenbaker, invented what is considered the first commercially available personal computer, the Kenbak-1. A Kenbak-1 machine owned by Paul Allen of Microsoft sold today at auction for close to $120,000.
If any of my friends are interested in learning more about the story of the Kenbak-1, or how my dad built it in our garage on Leven Lane, he is still open to talk about it. At 94, he is slowing down a bit, so you might want to reach out to him before he turns 95 in December.

Glaswegians don’t waste a second to give things a nickname. It’s not even on Google Maps, but we’ve got the Squiggly, Squinty, and now Swivelly to complete the trifecta of bridges.

It’s nice to flex the old reporting muscles to work out what the real story is here (school was running at 70 per cent capacity, the small Christian trust that runs it is losing money), but sort of feel like the BBC reporter should have done it instead.

Hi Internet! I'm Drew and THIS IS MY FACE. If this GIF has ever brought you joy in the past, I humbly ask you to consider making a donation to the National MS Society. It would mean a lot to me and to those I know affected by the disease! Donate at blinkingguy.com
