Scottish elections are, rightly, a bit different tho. The actions of the UK Gov't (particularly as they have commited to better collaboration with Scotland than the Tories) will have an impact but 2026 will mostly be a verdict on the SNP Gov't of the last 15 years. And it's under a PR system.

It turns out that the constituency for retreating on net zero and saying you will keep cutting public spending until you can completely eradicate national insurance is not as large as the one Boris got by saying he would do net zero, increasing spending on police, hospitals and schools. Who knew?

Surely all Johnson was preoccupied with was creating a perception that he was the 2020s 'Up yours, Delors!' guy, regardless of any reality. Which is why they talked tough but always backed down at the very last minute and had to accept a worse deal than that which was originally on offer.
