HOWEVER, it is WAY, WAY too early to reach definite conclusions. Whilst parents will be anticipating the change, it hasn't even come in yet! We’ll probably need to wait for at least 2 years to get a good sense of whether the effect is small or large / ENDS

The data reported shows a 1.7% drop in overall pupil numbers and a 4.6% drop in year 7 enrolments This is basically consistent with what we’d expect It’s also important to note that new enrolments fell by 2.7% last year too /4

The short-run effects are likely to be small as parents would likely try to avoid changing school mid-way through primary or secondary school BUT, we might get some clues from changing enrolments at key starting points like age 5, 7 and 11 /3

Without the VAT rise, private school pupil numbers would likely fall by 1% per year, given falls in the number of children Based on past evidence, our @theifs.bsky.social analysis concluded the VAT rise would likely reduce numbers by 3-7% in the medium to long-run, but with lots of uncertainty /2

Some brief thoughts on the new ISC data on private school pupil numbers and expected timing of changes TL;DR - overall changes are small, in line with expectations, but its WAY too early to conclude whether effect of VAT rise will be small or large 🧵 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Fantastic, sobering & detailed investigation by ITV wales on how reading is taught in wales This is a fixable problem. Focusing on or mandating synthetic phonics would improve reading, enable all pupils to access the full curriculum and narrow inequalities www.itv.com/news/2024-09...
