Oh I don't really intend to suggest that -- industrial strategy in this case could look like nationalising Boeing and firing the entire upper echelon of management, as an example. But it's not really relevant to how well the US economy has been doing lately.
If it is of national importance to have national capacity for major civilian aircraft manufacturing it should be part of your industrial strategy and not rely on keeping a mismanaged private company alive. If not, there's no reason Airbus shouldn't be allowed to outcompete them.
Re: Davidai, whether or not we agree with students, faculty (teachers) should never treat them as the enemy. It is our responsibility to engage them in pedagogical (which includes politics) processes, not virulent antagonism. Amazing that this needs to be said.
They're not necessarily shifting to smaller companies (although that does happen) but to larger more productive companies too. The main difference between the US and EU over the past 5 years is that the US has seen more people move from low productivity low paid jobs to higher productivity jobs.
