I was 13, in bed, reading "1984" for the first time. Julia hands Winston a note. He's certain that she reported him. The tension is at its thickest. Then he finally has the opportunity to read it... Biggest jumpscare in my life.
I had a really good time in the theater. It wasn't as violent as I feared I only had to close my eyes and cover my ears at the very end of the movie (I'd rate it at the same level of violence as "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"). I heartily recommend this new problematic fave!
While the movie has some terrible LGBT representation (who wants to claim ultra-violent drug lords for their community?) I loved the exploration of the question of what we can and can't change about ourselves.
There was a moment in the movie where I genuinely wondered if it was going to end up as a feel good movie, but no, that was just because the ticking timebomb that is Jessi (Selena Gomez) was out of frame for the moment, and Emilia was making a good-faith attempt at redemption.
I wasn't quite sure how they were going to make the musical numbers work in a thriller. But they worked really well, and the music was great.
The third main actress, Selena Gomez, was also great as Emilia's wife, a woman who spends the whole movie being consistently gaslit by Emilia and Rita, and who understandibly goes a little insane because of it.
Emilia as a character is so magnetic that at times the movie completely forget about its protagonist, Rita, who is almost as much in need of redemption as her client. I wish the movie had spent a bit more time on her character arc, because Zoe Saldana did a spectacular job.
I saw "Emilia Perez" last night. What a weird, amazing movie! Karla Sofia Gascon was completely magnetic in her role. I had no trouble believing in Emilia's charisma, while also making it obvious how and why she made the choices she made before and during the movie.
Happy to be part of this anthology.
