I didn't know this was out - Into The Vortex, a new complete guide to every TV Doctor Who story from the makers of DWM. I wrote a load of Hartnell, Troughton and Capaldi ones, and a bit of Tom Baker and David Tennant. Plus how to watch Daleks and comedy: doctorwhomagazine.com/bookazines/d...

It's a great concept, entertainingly executed. I hope it sells well.

During this year's Edinburgh Festival, there was a new late train from Edinburgh to Newcastle during the festival only. I remember having to run to Waverley over ten years ago to catch the usual last train after Toby Hadoke's early evening show.

Frustrating. (The Conservative north-east mayor candidate this year said he wanted to expand the Tyne and Wear Metro across the border into Ponteland - a good idea but likely to alienate his voters there.)

CrossCountry are priced to deter travel. A friend from the US was astonished that it was easier and cheaper for me to travel between Oxford and Newcastle via London rather than via Birmingham. Most of the direct trains have disappeared too.

In Oxfordshire I can go into Marylebone or Paddington; Marylebone is closer to where I live, but as you know Chiltern tickets are often more expensive for a slower journey, and their advantage comes from avoiding Oxford city centre.
