I thought the banjo also had African roots yet isn’t thought of an African American instrument.

Can we hook up Grok to this thing and wait for the explosion, just like on Star Trek where Kirk convinced the AI to blow up?

Like after all school shootings, I've already seen calls for "more mental health screening." So sadly need to repost this again. 1. Mental illness predicts being a victim more than an injurer. 2. We CANNOT determine risk factors for shootings by looking AT SHOOTERS. It's a core stats fallacy:

Mass Shooters, Mental Illness, and a Critical Statistical Mistake
Mass Shooters, Mental Illness, and a Critical Statistical Mistake

A study tells us that 70% percent of mass shooters have blue eyes. That might not mean that having blue eyes helpfully predicts mass shooters. There's a big, often overlooked, statistical pitfall so m...

New to Bluesky? Bluesky handles moderation differently than you might be used to. With loads of toggles and settings to change, it can be hard to wrap your mind around it. Here’s how it works: www.eff.org/deeplinks/20...

wrote a thing idly after the kids went to bed

a poem with no title. I tried to paste the entirety of it into alt text but it ran out of characters before the poem was done, which seemed worse than just describing the poem. the point of the poem is that there's a sort of masculinist conception of writing as neurotic compulsion that I think is really wrongheaded, but at the same time, it's framing that's useful for some people, so they should hold that position if they like; but like most generalized writing advice, "don't write unless you must" seems silly to the author of this poem, i.e. me.

Here’s my hot take: I don’t care if USPS loses a boatload of money every year until the end of time. We need to stop thinking about these things as businesses and start thinking about them as SERVICES. Your tax dollars are an investment in honestly one of the coolest things in our country. I ❤️ USPS

Leading @tnr.bsky.social this morning, I explore why the national media is short-circuiting over Democrats right now, how Trump burst their bubble and how the gap between their stage-direction political analysis and reality is rendering them pointless at the exact time our democracy needs them most.

Beware the Pundit-Brained Version of the Democratic Convention
Beware the Pundit-Brained Version of the Democratic Convention

As everyday Americans tune in to watch Kamala Harris receive her party’s nomination, they should trust what they see with their own eyes—especially as D.C.’s chattering class tries to gaslight them.
