those rules, like Ars Magica, are designed for active play and dynastic management over generations rather than "and now we cut ahead 120 years"
you don't even need to bother with a different ruleset, because L5R's rules are genuinely pretty good - they hit the right balance of flexible/adaptable but also with tons of additional cruft for people who want it

every so often I go back into the books and think "man, a generational L5R campaign - one where you do 8-10 sessions for the characters and then skip forward a generation to their descendants - would be totally baller"
the problem with Legend of the Five Rings is that while it is obviously problematic, what with it being a fantasy samurai RPG written mostly by white people, it is *also* extremely cool
