if you’re wondering why JD Vance doesn’t think childcare is expensive, it’s because his mother-in-law dropped her professorship to become a live-in nanny, as he believes “post-menopausal females” should do. he also suggested that otherwise, she should’ve paid for their childcare.

Host: That's the whole purpose of the postmenopausal female in theory. Did your in-laws and particularly your mother-in-law show up in some huge way?

Vance: She lived with us for a year.

Host: Right. I didn't know the answer there. So that's this weird unadvertised feature of marrying an Indian woman.

Vance: Yeah. It's in some ways the most transgressive thing I've ever done against sort of the hyper-neoliberal approach to work and family. My wife had this baby seven weeks before she started the clerkship. Still not sleeping any more than an hour and a half in a given interval. And her mom just took a sabbatical. She's a biology professor in California. Just took a sabbatical for a year and came and lived with us and took care of our kid for you. It was just one of those things where it's like, this is what you do.

Host: So a biology professor Ph.D…

Vance: Yes.

Host: Drops what they're doing…

Vance: Yeah!

Host: To immediately tend to the needs of a new mother with her infant.

Men that call women „females“ are just the best.

It's insane that he doesn't understand how flawed the childcare business model is. He actually said that the problem is that childcare is expensive because there aren't enough childcare providers. Oof

Almost 30 years ago my dad was seriously considering becoming a SAHD because childcare for my 2 siblings almost (but not quite) matched his earnings minus gas, and that was an employer-subsidized facility. (My stepmom worked there too but was an engineer, whereas he was an engineering assistant.)

Yeah - that situation sounds very generalizable. Seven weeks, and she's right as rain. Totally makes sense that he comes to the conclusion "this is what you do". ... now, What's a sabatical...? We only get layoffs. And ya' just keep grandma in the garage, right? Sure. That tracks.
