I have weird little goblins living in my brain and I endorse this message.
I have written academic and fictional texts, and in both cases, I have found that writing the kind of text I would like to read myself yields a better result than pandering to the mainstream.
I used to direct music videos and tried to explain this to bands who wanted to "look cool" all the time! That being sincere and weird is the most interesting and "coolest" thing a person can do, whereas trying to appear cool is by far the least cool thing you can do.

I commonly referred to mine as gremlins. You're right though... they're more goblin-ish.
