People needed it spelled out more clearly because the original article said "LGBTQ+ students" instead of clearly naming the students who are harmed. This is a trend in reporting on anti-trans laws and actions - we are never named.
I'm coming to hate the term "LGBTQ" because it lets folks avoid actually naming us. They never have to say the "dirty words" of our actual identities, just letters. And they never have to acknowledge just which of those letters is being harmed.
This article still says the gender neutral restrooms are "to accommodate LGBTQ+ students" and I'm aware that cis people are about to tediously explain to me why cis gay students might use them while ignoring that trans students are at enormous risk of physical & sexual violence.
Yeah, that lumping together can be frustrating, and can undermine clarity on what is happening. One of the other effects it has is hiding the role and extent of anti-trans hate and discrimination by cis lgb folks.
If I got a message that my kids' school was installing windows on student bathrooms, I'd probably murder the principal with a swingline stapler.
