the foundation of conservatism is the idea that the world is inherently and intractably harsh. it can’t be changed, you can only be harsh in return. solidarity just makes you a sucker.

Yup, any ideas of a better world being possible are criticized and ridiculed relentlessly probably out of their fear of change and uncertainty or having to put effort into doing something

Basically an entire subculture of trauma response. Grown men and women who've built their whole world view around justifying their parents' cruelty and establishing permission to perpetuate the cycle.

Because generation after generation has to deal with garbage parents that just completely fail to figure anything out and pass it on to their doomed kids. I'm certain that if my takeaway from Ender's Game as a kid wasn't "adults are going to screw you up and not care" I would be one of them.

It can't be changed, but they must own as many guns as possible to try.

conservatism is inherently a political philosophy of wanting bad things to happen to people you don't like.

It's such a mean-spirited way of looking at the world, one that leads to casually justifying cruelty on the basis that the "right" people are being subjected to it—the ones who, owing to who they are, "deserve" it.

I thought the foundation of conservatism is that there must be in-groups that the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups that the law binds but does not protect.

Well said. This explains how they display reverence for the police and military, but make a joke out of PTSD and tell people who have it to suck it up.

I don't really think that the belief that the world is inherently harsh is fundamental to conservative thinking, that would better be attributed to the feeling that progressive change is ultimately destructive, their solidarity is just more focused to their own communities well-being

this view is also reliably and tediously repeated by the type of guy who acts like he's had such a School of Hard Knocks jokerfying life, but as you listen to his stories it becomes clear that he is common denominator asshole in all interactions
