UBI is more important than 'job growth.' We can 'grow jobs' all we like but we're still going to have things where there are 1000 applicants for a single position. What are the unsuccessful 999 people supposed to do? There aren't 999 jobs for them. We need UBI immediately.
It's weird that I don't get 1000 applications for the 'lab ensign' postings any more though
UBI, fully funded housing and higher education and public transit, no means testing, no bureaucratic hurdles, no long waitlists. If we're gonna automate all the jobs, fine, but people still gotta live.
Right, the point of UBI is ultimately to change the nature of the employment relation, by making it not "on pain of starvation" anymore
Where it's been tested, mental health quality skyrocketed, employment went up, it was good Deemed not worth it though, got to think what kind of taxes can be implemented to make it worth it The US's 50s and 60s economic boom was funded by 90% corporate tax rates That's a good starting point
Totally agreed.
Oh I'd take multiple steps further. UBI is just the start, baby! Go full on post-scarcity Venus Project, Star Trek etc.
I agree!
Yeah! "Growing jobs" won't solve the broken-ass system that sees fake job listings and deliberate ghosting and managers holding out for "the perfect candidate" and other bullshit. UBI means these corrupt, lazy managers and owners will have to actually put effort into competing.
Absolutely 💯 Also because climate-wise, there’s a real question of how much ‘work’ the planet can handle. There are plenty of jobs that currently have people doing them, that will need to be done less or not at all. UBI undergirds all the transitions we’re gonna need.
This skeet somewhat brought to you by a) wanting UBI but also b) seeing what we did at work to fill one position in our group -- we had the job ad open for two weeks and HR told us we got nearly 1800 responses in that time. :\
