I would not have previously picked Asheville as one of the places people will need to move away from though still wouldn’t but I would no longer immediately close the door in your face if you tried to make the case

Recommend reading up on Camille in Nelson County, VA. Unfortunately, there's a history of tropical storms dumping incredible amounts of rain in the Appalachians.

There are historical and socioeconomic factors at play in the Appalachians that make some parts of them particularly prone to flooding. I grew up in an area where they regularly boated children to school because the road was flooded.

The Appalachian mountain towns are especially vulnerable to catastrophic flooding. Eastern Kentucky got hammered a little over a year ago with a hundred years flood. All of the infrastructure is in the valleys - roads, gas stations, grocery stores. All of it gets washed away in these floods

I don’t think that people need to move away from Asheville region. But we need a conversation about infrastructure and regulation, resiliency etc; and not building in places that have high risk, especially for the sake of short-term private developer gains.

When the entire sky is angry with you there is no safe place.

My understanding is that the west coast of Florida (recently!) used to be where you lived to escape the severe weather that regularly plagued the east coast of Florida.

that's kind of the hard part though. it does happen (the rain from hurricanes juan (1985) and hugo (1989) did a ton of damage in appalachia, it's just uncommon and unpredictable (though it could be becoming more common)

My guess is local climate activists and researchers know the risks to their regions better than most people and it wouldn’t be too hard to compile a comprehensive report for the entire country if it was a priority.

There are literally people who moved away from coastal erosion and hurricanes to…asheville.

I don't think there's any region in the world that wouldn't be in deep trouble from 1'-4' of rain in 36 hours. There's more prepared and less prepared, end more likely to happen and less likely, but no one anywhere would have weathered that gracefully.
