For a long time in American politics, the Democrats were socially conservative and protective of institutions of care, whereas the Republicans were capitalist and socially progressive. We need to remember that FDR's Great Society for example operated under segregation, wherever segregation existed.

I think the reason why we might not ever see a leftist Trump is because you will rarely see someone who's both skeptical of capitalism and in the business of manufacturing consent. We should figure out a way to reach out to more people without the bookish angle that's not an advertisement either.
In reality it's nothing deep. Most of it is "I think this thing is negative/positive" and "I'm a capable person deserving of trust." I don't think he cares about talking policy for the same reasons commercials aren't interested in giving you an objective analysis of their products. It's marketing.
