Sorry to subpost or whatever. I dislike feminist-inflected talk that erases the actual contributions of women — but it’s such a common issue that I don’t think it’s fair to direct my annoyance •at• someone…

Happens a lot with Mary Anning, who certainly didn't receive the titles she deserved but who was hugely respected by men in her field. There's a *reason* we all know about her, and it does her a disservice to claim she couldn't insert herself firmly into the heart of early paleontology.

Oh, uh, didn’t expect the reposts, and should probably say that I wrote a book on this very subject, coming out in February, JANE AUSTEN’S BOOKSHELF: www.simonandschuster.com/books/Jane-A...

Yes we have this a lot in computing where really huge early contributions by women are forgotten or downplayed and a small number of often less technical contributions highlighted to suit a narrative that women can only succeed in the field if given opportunities to exercise 'soft skills'.

I like to be informed. It's a factoid I'm happy to know. I support subposting over endlessly trying to argue with people who can't hear you over their assumptions.

It is something that happens so much more often than it should—real women and their contributions erased so we can pretend we are doing something for the first time, or “discovering” something “hidden.” It really grinds my gears too!!
