When someone wants space, their reasons are theirs and theirs alone unless they choose to share them. It's not an attack. They could have trauma. Their life could be a flying stress anvil. There's no harm in asking what happened, but if they're not feeling that either, leave em alone.
For me, the secret is to stay standing up and get it done earlier in the day. Realize a moment that you are standing and have the thought, "oh I.. could... get the dishes done right now" and JUMP on that bitch. Get started when you sense you might finish and don't sit until you're done.
