I almost ALWAYS discourage undergrads from considering art school because a myopic arts education leaves you a worse artist than might more general studies, because technical mastery and familiarity with your medium is shared by everyone else in your field. What isn't is all of the OTHER stuff. 1/

I majored in Journalism at Ohio State and never set foot in an art class. I learned by doing, filling the school newspaper with cartoons, and working in production. And I learned how to write, and research a story. And I was employable when I graduated. Art schools are a ponzi scheme.

What makes you think arts education is myopic? Have you looked at various art school curricula to arrive at this belief? What right do you have to discourage undergrads from pursuing their desired paths?

This is unfortunately true for art school. Thankfully I love learning on my own so I am not set back by it, issue was very little universities offered illustration as a major

Perhaps a bit of different field as I studied industrial design, but I loved art school as I FINALLY found like minded people. People with same interests and passion. That shouldn’t be underestimated.

Arts-specific education *can* give you an early skill boost, but you'll be at the same level as everyone else within that first ten years of practice, which might take them eight. That sounds like a big deal, but it isn't. 2/

My biggest regret is not double majoring in physics; if I'd had the opportunity to not have to work during my studies.

I specifically didn't apply to any art schools because I knew that I wanted to still have access to good courses in other fields. And once I was enrolled in university I made sure that every quarter I had at least one course that wasn't an art or art history class.
