I think a better framing than reading him as an absent father would be asking, "What is the consequence of treating the whole village like family?" I think that runs through the series.

There's lots of themes of fathers and their children, abuse and privilege, connections and that which tears them apart. And there's a really interesting structure to the story that explains Boruto's character, but I don't want to spoil it for you.

I think it's good to have an investment in Boruto's development through NNG for the emotional impact, but I think it's good overall.
