I urge you to read the full report from Index on Censorship about schools in the UK who are removing LGBTQ+ books from their libraries, often just because one parent complains. This needs to be stamped out - all students deserve better than this. www.indexoncensorship.org/2024/08/bann...
A special investigation reveals more than half of UK school librarians surveyed by Index have been asked to remove books from their shelves
Thank you for posting this.
I've come on such a journey since I was at school in many areas. I know full well that my parents would have been amongst the first to complain at such books (and they did complain about sex education - "can't teach kids about that!"). I feel I'm spending much of my life righting their wrongs.
Just to add and support any librarians facing this there is clear guidance to back you up - backed by Arts Council and by extension DCMS and the government. www.cilip.org.uk/news/651518/...
Geesh I'm glad this light has been put back on this! I'm wondering how to get this into my Section 28 doc, getting towards finalising the last filming and looking at the last 'what's happening in 2020s' part. If you're up for a chat Simon let me know
Can I ask, "the UK" is England here?
Censorship of books is scary, whether it's by the left or the right.
Thanks. It's oddly focused on Catholic schools, and we don't have a big Catholic populations, so I looked up the stats. Faith schools have to follow the National Curriculum. Faith academies don't, and I suspect are a lot worse with censorship. www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk/choosing-a-s....
