As a follow-up to the world creation thread - I am looking for advice on naming conventions. During world creation I asked them to use plain English descriptors for locations and people - but I want to give areas and people actual names relating to their culture and history. #ttrpg

Incorporate history into your names. This is easy to say and hard to do. But it is how Misión San Antonio de Valero becomes the Alamo and how a prominent university is Cow Ford.

I’m a word nerd and generally assign each distinct culture a real world analogue for at least the structure, sound and “feel” of the language - basing places and names on the conventions of that source. Occasionally I go so far as to sketch out a conlang’s noun & adjective structure to use.

I know the PCs will probably end up with the usual nonsense - Bob the Strong, Eric the Cleric and Nastootle Niddly.

I always use the Onomastikon to get a feel for naming structures by culture - tekeli.li/onomastikon/
