UK: We can't afford to give primary school children lunch. France: We already give children 4-course lunches, but research found them hungry at end of day too, with parents giving ultra-processed snacks because they're working — so let's give an after school snack now too fyi @nigella.bsky.social
My sister’s mother-in-law was a French school dinner lady. That involved her having an entire chef’s training, as well as nutritional education, plus managing a major budget. It’s a different world.
Some regions do 5-course lunches. My neighbor (I'm in 16) is a lunch lady at a school here and showed me some of the food she makes for the kids, honestly looked like proper restaurant plating (slap dash tower of veg in the center of the plate, topped with filet of fish, surrounded by sauce)
Today I learned that in France they have a kind of food called a Margate.
Our primary school kid does get lunch here in France albeit it’s not universally high quality. Gouter (afternoon snack) is done by parents at least here, not the school.
I highly approve of this snacking approach. Little bears need constant sustenance.
Erm, England, not UK. Don't know about Wales, but Scottish primary school lunches are free. www.mygov.scot/primary-scho...
Information on free school meals and how you claim free school meals, free breakfasts, free milk and free fruit.
Parents in the US have to be satisfied if their children make it through the day without becoming victims of a mass shooting
Why is the UK so hopeless?
Australia doesn't give free food. My grandmother said they used to get a small bottle of milk for breakfast. A lot of low income schools do "breakfast club" which is organised by a charity or parents.
Just curious - what’s Margate? (Not the town - it’s on the menu!)
