Green Day is good, but the backlash was predetermined. Most things that huge are going to feel cringe and suffer cultural backlash 20 years later, the alternative is that we’ve entirely culturally stagnated. But I agree with you, it’s important to separate the merit from the current moment.

It's the opposite for me. At the time I felt I was too sophisticated and smart to deign to enjoy pop-punk. Now I 100% admit they got songs.
