Basically, when your actions affect others, they can definitely be regulated. Where your actions affect only yourself, there is a much higher bar to be met for the government to regulate. Hence, no running around with guns here (that's nuts), but you can access assisted dying.
This provides consensus jurists to be appointed to the court. Experts in law. Our cases just never get as contentious as they do in the US. The Court drove same-sex marriage, and also a right-to-die. Canada values freedom FROM, rather than US freedom TO do whatever you want fuck the consequences.
