I don't think enough people understand that it's not just roads, bridges, housing, and water systems that aren't designed to current climate conditions - it's mental health systems, insurance systems, emergency response systems, agricultural systems, medical education systems,

This might also be entirely my own fault for not having put more effort into my follow-list but I feel like my timeline is very US-centric… Would love tips on how to expand to more international folx tweeting on climate, biodiversity, anti-colonialism, anti-capitalism and the like if anyone has them

You know this planet with auroras and eclipses? It has orchids, grass snakes and mangoes too. Rainbow trout and diatoms and self-organizing college students and star fish. What are the odds of it all & how about a just and equitable economy and then living lives of awestruck peace?

I relate to these scientists so much. Nearly every day I wonder if I’m living in a completely different reality from most people I know of if it’s just that no one’s vocalising the anxiety they’re feeling inside. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit would be met.
Many of the scientists envisage a "semi-dystopian" future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck.
Numerous experts said they had been left feeling hopeless, infuriated and scared by the failure of governments to act despite the clear scientific evidence provided.
"I think we are headed for major societal disruption within the next five years," said Gretta Pecl, at the University of Tasmania.
"[Authorities] will be overwhelmed by extreme event after extreme event, food production will be disrupted. I could not feel greater despair over the future."

In general UN rapporteurs and bodies are much more progressive than member states. Thinking especially of UNDESA which used to be referred to derisively by Global North country representatives because they thought the department's reports were too partial to Global South country interests.

Sounds to me like the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment supports degrowth? 👀💁🏻‍♀️

UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS
OFFICE OF THE HIGH COMMISSIONER
Speaking of people in the global South who want to achieve economic development, Boyd said that humanity needs to confront a paradox. "Humanity needs to shrink its collective ecological footprint, yet billions of people in the global South need to expand their energy and material use to achieve a comfortable standard of living and fully enjoy their human rights," he said.
"Wealthy States must take the lead in reducing their footprints and financing green growth in the global South."
Reflecting on his six years tenure at the helm of the environment and human
rights mandate, Boyd said that he was most proud of the universal recognition of the human right to a clean, healthy

"Duflo... says the money could be sent directly to the people in target countries via cash transfers...This is a large departure from the U.N. loss and damage fund, which is currently managed by the U.S.-led World Bank—instead of being sent directly to developing countries."
