there's a whole thread in my dissertation about whose practices get accorded "religion" status & whose get derided as "magic" or persecuted as "occult;" & how the intentional act of occultation (literally "make hidden") looks very different depending on your situation w/in axes of power & oppression
See, this is one of those things that makes me irate. The very concept of "religion" when applied to a system like Buddhism, makes no fucking sense. In fact, I'd charge that the only reason Buddhism has "religious" status is because it's the only frame that makes sense to a western mind.
That is AWESOME. 😎
I talk about this in my classes with the colloquial use of “mythology” to mean all non-christian religions.
FINALLY. That ALWAYS confused me! (yes, I'm white, I'm sorry). I love mythology and religion and theology and all of it. Always seeing Vodou being classified as mythology or "folk practices" drove me nuts. If you spend five minutes researching it, it shows parallels with every system classified
I almost never post about this, for obvious reasons (being white and all) but Lucumí saved my life during a suicidal period. I got very lucky to be cared for with love, acceptance, and grace. It's more religion than any of these Christian Nationalist freaks will ever know in 10 lifetimes.
