ah, the horrors beyond the walls of Academe! (😊)

A young boy, guant, living well beyond the cloistered halls plaintively asks of the Internet's gatekeepers:
"Please, Sir, may I have some more bandwidth?"

The Chair is basically a watered down version of Groves of Academe. There’s a lot you’ll recognize, but more biting moments about committee meetings and college administrators.

I may still hand that title to Mary McCarthy’s Groves of Academe, but committees and belonging initiatives may have gotten me.

That's exactly where costs can and should be negligible in—ideal—academe: if one is willing to say smth. about someone's research (e.g., as peer-reviewer, but it needn't be confined to that role), one ought to be willing to state/ argue it PUBLICLY. Nay? Then one should STFU. x.com/sbuhai/status/...

I get you! In the end, I left the R1 for an R2 because, well, I discovered elite academe was not for me. I sort of wish I'd not "gotten lucky" because the job wasn't a good fit. Live and learn.

getting a guy obsessed with misleadingly applied "black crime" stats, who has FOIA'd a black professor's personal emails as part of a petty dispute, to write an op-ed about why anti-black racism is okay in the academe. wish i could cancel my nyt sub all over again

Perhaps jumping to academe two years ago wasn’t a completely stupid career move after all.

The Female Quixote, Charlotte Lennox's 1752 novel, is a personal favorite, and remarkably rings relevant today, from its focus on women in fandoms, women in academe, women in public, rape culture, classism, isolation & nerd stuffs. Plus it's funny af.

"There need to be more X in academe"= building a pipeline starting w undergrad, and let me tell you, the hateful right-wing reply guys, if they are in college, are not in Phi Beta Kappa, or on the Dean's list. They won't be accepted to grad programs with their 2.8 GPA 🤷‍♀️

a mentor once told me that i'd have to hustle twice as hard to get half as far. i remember thinking at the time, "okay, i can hustle. that's all i know anyway." he was looking out for me. but in retrospect, i wish he'd told me to always demand equity. to hustle for a better academe, if anything.
