In 1989 Senator Jesse Helms pushed through a restriction on "homoeroticism" for US government arts funding and had the NEA pull grants to queer artists. He targeted Audre Lorde as an example of the obscenity that US taxpayers shouldn't pay for. My God did she clap back in style:
