“Trump ramps up racist rhetoric in closing weeks” still keeps you in neutral horserace territory, just point out what they’re doing

How are we to hope that our very tiny list of journalism outposts, full of overeducated and debt burdened crybabies and their desperate editors, are likely to ever separate their news seeking vs endless horserace punditry if everyone on the inside DC is like this?

Dumb question: is it possible the sample demos are being tweaked constantly in order to make a compelling horserace narrative? It is absurd that the polling has been a static coin toss in swing states for months. It feels off. Are we really an exactly 50/50 split country in swing states? Seems sus

I sure hope it’s just the media inventing a horserace!

I hope you’re right. The media wants a horserace. They don’t care at all about democracy and would become the state’s mouthpiece once we’re an authoritarian country, it’s clear. I’m so glad Harris is cutting them out of the picture. We all need to.

horserace brain is going to kill us all. "wedge issue" is derogatory, it's a term that refers to venal politics, and here it's used as a simple fact of the matter, as natural and inarguable as the air we breathe

BS horserace coverage. And they're featuring Mark by god Halperin, so I really had no belief that I'd learn anything. I don't think the MSM are anti-democracy, although I will agree they seem awfully unaware about their role in harming it. But I do believe they know hyping a close race gets clicks.

As the duly nominated candidate of one of the only two parties, he MUST be covered as a serious candidate. Otherwise, that would mean that one of the two parties is a deeply unserious party of grievance and rage, and that would be bad. Plus it's so much easier to cover this as a horserace!

Working on a take that while Nate silver himself massively improved horserace coverage, he also made it more popular, and the fact that mainstream outlets report endlessly on what the polls say is evidence of decay because while silver is fine, his celebrity has pulled us from issues-heavy coverage.

It's not the LIBS who are shifting vibes. It's the LEFT that are extremely pissed that it's the Cheneys and the like who are getting the attention and not them. The Dems were supposed to fail without the left, which may not be true. And that is making the left furious.

Why did libs suddenly slip into the doldrums when the race is so stable? Here’s my read on the source of the doomerism, and why I think they have less (and more!) to worry about than polls would suggest.

What's Behind Creeping Democratic Doomerism?
It's mostly just free-floating anxiety—things actually look pretty good in general!—but there's at least one coal-mine canary.

Over the past week or so, the vibe in liberal politics has taken a turn toward—it’s hard to say. Something short of panic, but well into unease about the state of the presidential race. A psychic shift palpable enough to bleed into horserace coverage.
