One of the greatest insights of Marx is that capitalism cannot reform itself. It cannot be 'fixed' because its sins -- imperialism, exploitation, resource extraction, division, laws designed to punish the poor and protect the rich, etc. -- are baked into the model. It can't function without them!
Abolish and defund are a dead end--people have legitimate concerns about crime, and the answers that abolitionists muster are totally unconvincing. I wish that the left would pick up on that, and move towards aggressive reform as a near-term goal, with less funding as a far-off end state.

I believe this may be an impossible reform to achieve but I also believe that a government that does not wholeheartedly try it anyway is fascist. One must imagine Sisyphus happy, etc
A very happy 80 Days Wager Day to all those who observe. On this day in 1872, Phileas Fogg made a wager of £20,000 with other members of London's Reform Club that he could circumnavigate the world in 80 days or less.
it's stories like these that make words like "abolish" and "defund" a lot more resonant than "reform"!
Immigration reform should include an increase in judges to expedite court cases, a streamlined path to be allowed to find employment, and the ability to document the undocumented so that they can join society.
Anyway, if you want to reform the police, start with making them park legally. Parking is truly the tip of the iceberg. If they're willing to break such a seemingly insignificant law out in the open (which it's not, given the accessibility issues) imagine what they do behind closed doors!
"make the cops stop breaking the law" would be a MASSIVE reform measure in every city"make the cops stop breaking the law" would be a MASSIVE reform measure in every city
A man called 311 to report police cars parked on the sidewalk and in crosswalks. An NYPD officer harassed him for 10 months, by leaving voicemails pretending to be a "former romantic parnter," breathing heavily, and making dolphin and sheep noises.
Officer Brendan Sullivan was hit with a fine for harassing a Brooklyn resident who had complained about illegally parked police cruisers.
