So many people still misunderstand the importance of routines for autistic people - and failing to see why they matter, they try to impose them, and end up reducing autonomy and adding to stress, rather than taking it away. I hope this piece helps people to get why routines can make things worse.

There are dangers to assuming autistic people need routines, without understanding why. Otherwise, they can do more harm than good.

What do empowering autistic self-accommodations look like to you, or to your autistic person, child, or student? For many, they look like implementing daily routines/rituals. Having a sensory friendly environment. Having fidgets and comfort items around, including safe foods. #neurodiversity
