With respect, I suspect both of you *have* seen “gantlet” in old-school publications that edit copy —but didn’t register it because you thought the word was always spelled “gauntlet.” This is from the NYT a few days ago (Sept. 30)
It takes an old school pedant (e.g. me) to correct it, I hope gently, at this point. But look it up. 🙂
“Running the gantlet” is spelled that way (in the U.S., anyway; Brits have surrendered) because it has nothing to do with “gauntlet.” It derives from a hazing ritual practiced by soldiers in Ghent. …but I’m not surprised that people have no idea of that and wonder why it’s not “gauntlet.”
