Here's a *genuine* piece of advice for new users: Do NOT subscribe to a moderation list or labeler unless you are absolutely 100% certain you know who created it, what the criteria are, and how the criteria are applied. They ARE a vector of harrassment and brigading.

Some really helpful thoughts in Neville’s blog about how GenAI’s outputs as a historian ‘consistently exclude the possibility of gaps, silences or ambiguities in knowledge of the past, always presenting a seamless and confident account’ 🗃️

Although that Triceratops is relatively accurate, it's worth pointing out that gourds were selectively bred by ancient human societies to resemble their current form rather than evolving naturally, so even though flowering plants date back to the Cretaceous period, there's no possible way a Tricerat

It's trite to say but it'll never stop annoying me that it all fell off because of the whims of some random unrelated billionaire who had nothing to do with anything. Somehow he got a vote on something hundreds of millions of people were using and outweighed all of them.

I was feeling pretty good about running my blog (and several other sites) on Wordpress... until a few weeks ago. Now I feel like I should be looking for alternatives. (Unfortunately my annual Jetpack subscription renews today, and I don't think I can turn it off just yet.) techcrunch.com/2024/...

This shit is what I mean about how genAI is not actually a time saver. It wastes not only your time, but the time of the person who has to sort out the AI mess. The researcher now has to do work all over again, and that librarian lost hours that could've gone to their actual job.

Do social media the way you like, but I think it’s useful to know that users here are at best reluctant to follow back empty profiles. Follow lots of people, yes, but add the photo, banner, and bio, and post something, however banal, first for best results.

I think it’s important we use the right terminology. www.scientificamerican.com/article/chat... Quick summary: a hallucination is the product of sentience gone astray and perceiving the world wrong. Bullshitting is the output of a system that doesn’t care about truth or falsity.

ChatGPT Isn’t ‘Hallucinating’—It’s Bullshitting!

Every time I see an article about how liberals/leftists must avoid 'polarisation' I want to share this graph. Polarisation is actually a euphemism for the radicalism of the centre-right into a far-right.

Posting this again because a lot of people said they found it helpful! Guide to ALT text: www.perkins.org/resource/how...

ALT text copied and pasted from the linked website: An infographic titled “How To Write Alt Text” featuring a photo of a capybara. Parts of alt text are divided by color, including identify who, expression, description, colour, and interesting features. The finished description reads “A capybara looking relaxed in a hot spa. Yellow yuzu fruits are floating in the water, and one is balanced on the top of the capybara’s head.”
