Having watched the unprecedented efforts to save the in-person conference up close over the past few weeks, sending out this announcement has me feeling pretty gutted. But it’s for the best. Stay safe folks!

Tampa meteorologist describes how to read Hurricane Milton's cone of uncertainty. "The center could be up here. It could be here. It could be here. It could be all the way down here." He's pretending to be a Hypothetical Outcome Plot 📊... youtu.be/sI3jJM19Fe8?...

I just want to appreciate what a spectacular feat this was on the part of the Core Committee and others. They moved an academic conference, within the same metro area, in the same date range, without having to reschedule any of the conference program, with two-weeks notice. 🤯 Amazing team effort!

Dear VIS Community, we have great news! After a busy weekend, we completed an emergency site visit at a new conference venue in the Tampa area. We are moving ahead with the new venue and will provide specifics once the contract is finalized, around the end of the week!

"Singular value decomposition" (SVD) is the most useful linear algebra technique I know. But it's often not taught in classes! Here's a visual demo for the 2D case, which gives you all the intuition you need for higher dimensions: www.bewitched.com/demo/svd/

My point is the study conditions seem designed to produce a particular answer to her research question. Filtering to highly-educated affluent women seems like part of this strategy to tell a less complicated and less intersectional story that holds up religion as a cure for society’s problems.

I mean her whole study was conditioning on the outcome variable, so I think of it as mostly reflecting selection bias. Also, she has a conflict of interest as someone who shares the religious lifestyle she’s advocating. Overall, it doesn’t give the impression of credible research.
