I always suspected this could be the case, and new research proves it's true: Rich countries could raise 5x the money poor countries need for climate finance thru windfall taxes on fossil fuels, ending harmful subsidies + a wealth tax on billionaires. Read more: www.oilchange.org/publications...

Simple measures could raise five times more money than poorer countries are asking for, research claims

as always this cartoon remains relevant. Joel Pett

Climate Summit cartoon by Joel Pett. A presenter points to a board that lists: energy independence, preserve rainforests, sustainability, green jobs, livable cities, renewables, clean water & air, healthy children, etc.

At the very least, end fossil fuel subsidies as they cannot compete with renewables on a level economic playing field.

It's a drop in the bucket compared to oil subsidies, and the study hasn't been updated since 2015 (at least, not that I've seen), but killing beef subsidies would be make a big difference beyond the dollar value. www.aier.org/article/the-...

Related fact: California, supposed “climate leader”, is the only major oil producing state that has ZERO severance tax on oil and gas production. Whereas other states, including red states, have a 5-25% tax on gross production

I always knew this was likely the case too. They don’t because they are reliant upon the fossil fuel companies for donations & haven’t the backbone to stand up to them. It was the same over employment, health & safety, education in the 19th c, civil rights, pharmaceuticals & tobacco in the 20th c.

We have all the technology and knowledge we need to beat climate change. We just lack the will.

Looked at the links in that article... and their publication is about *assertions* and policy change proposals. It is preaching what *should* be done, and is not an economic analysis of the entire system of economies (which if done would be a massive volume of economic calculations.) We *could*...

Right!? Turns out there's plenty of money. We just need some democracy in the financial system so people have a say in what it all gets spent on: Arms sales or an end to poverty? Making billionaire oligarchs even richer or funding a global just transition. I think we know what people would prefer

Yes, but tax billionaires out of existence. Earth can't afford billionaires. Not even one. If one exists, others will want to join the billionaire club, and then we'll be 8 billion billionaires on an empty rock.
