Super interesting to watch Jon get personal by asking about Candace's daughter and then backpeddle with "if only all parents were as caring as you"...what are you talking about? Is social media harmful or are the lack of social support and low media literacy the cause? He seems to want it both ways.

My youngest is at a private school and they have gone all-in on this book. Parent reading club, phones banned at school, just this general disapproval of social media and screens in general. Do my kids watch too much YouTube? Yes! But they have this entire internet of information!

I'm not a fan of Haidt's sensationalism around social media or his focus on the actual phone as the problem, but I think he's right to be concerned about SM. Odgers comes off as dismissive of those concerns to me. specifically I'm concerned about SM access and wider internet access at a young age
I tried to jump around a bit and listen to parts of the debate, and every moment I stopped on had Haidt interrupting the other speaker to ask "But would you let YOUR DAUGHTER do that???"
OooOooh, thank you for posting this. Haidt is everywhere right now and although I don’t necessarily disagree with the idea of less technology in kids’ lives, i don’t think he proves his claims.
It's the same fucking debate from 40 or 60 years ago, that focused on how modern music kids were listening to was corrupting them. It's a lazy stupid argument and it simplifies an incredibly complex problem. It also tends to alleviate parents of the responsibility they have to raise their kids.
