This comic by Dakota Macfadzean, on *that* type of parent, has stuck with me ever since I first saw it a decade(!) ago. However, I've been unable to find it again since, so thanks very much to Ian for digging it up.
People that scoff at this comic need to realize this is real in everything from religion to politics that I bet they agree happens too. Share your loves, but they will find their own way.
Our oldest fell in love with the same stuff we like. We are proud geek parents. But as he gets older his tastes change. He lost interest in one thing and picked up three more. But we are not micromanaging obsessive parents so that's cool too!
Yep. This one stays with me constantly. Obviously ‘cos he sees all our geeky stuff the Scraplet is curious about some of it, but I wait for him to ask, preferring to show him newer stuff that’s more suitable for him. The flip side though is I think we’ve ended up bigger fans of Bluey than he is…
It also feels like such a great criticism of how big media studios try to push constant nostalgia-bait reboots/sequels on younger generations. In fact, the comic feels even more relevant now than it did in 2014.
That's my dad trying to get me to like sports...
It’s a very fucked up point of pride to tout your children’s “good taste” in music, movies, etc. Congrats buddy — glad you’d let your kid sit with you in the school cafeteria
It didn't take forever to find out that our daughter is her own person, but I did manage to infect her with Bullwinkle and 40s Warner Brothers cartoons along the way.
JFC, that comic is haunting. 😳
Best parenting advice I could give is recognise that your kids are as much individuals as you are. And they’ll be different to you, as you are to your parents. So don’t feel like you need to make your kids like you, and don’t feel like you have to raise them the way your parents raised you.
Yesssss. Same
