I have accepted that being autistic is a part of who I am, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it or enjoy it. I don't want to be sensitive to certain stimuli. I don't want to have to make sure the toothpaste I use is the right texture. I want to eat mashed potatoes without gagging.

The problem with having society changing to fit our needs is that would require society to constantly change. Everyone has different needs and it is impossible to meet all of those needs. There is also another thing: a lot of people don't want to be autistic. Myself included.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that is what is probable either. Mostly because what you were referring to touches upon eugenics territory. And suggesting that fixing autism would lead to eugenics is counterintuitive to research that can help a lot of people.

I think you know that is not what I mean by curing autism. I had made the comparison to helping paraplegics walk, or rather giving them the ability to walk again. I want that for autism.

That's fair. I too would only want an organization that I trust to research possible ways to rearrange the bain structure. This kind of research would benefit more than just autistic people as well. It would help clinical depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, maybe even stroke survivors.

Difference of opinion then. If there is a chance that I can fix my brain, make it more normal, I would like to take it. And we won't know of there will be that chance if research isn't done.

Eh, I personally don't consider "autism is curable" to be bad. But I also would personally take a cure for autism in a heartbeat, assuming such a cure did exist.

As I said before though, it is important to realize that Autism Speaks does not give good advice to parents when it comes to helping thei autistic child. Most of their advice is counter intuitive, and ends up hurting autistic children more than they help.

Suggesting that autism is something that should be cured isn't an inherently bad thing, at least to me. It's like suggesting that we should try and help paraplegics walk again, in that my life would be a lot better if I wasn't autistic.

Speaking as someone on the spectrum: Autism Speaks isn't necessarily bad for suggesting that autism is something that should be cured, but they are bad because they offer bad advice that ends up harming autistic people rather than helping them.
