Yeah they are pretty interesting - always good to find a few out about this time of year :)
There are a lot of terrestrial orchids in Australia - almost all are deciduous with minimal foliage and smallish flowers. A lot of these grow in environments with poor soils / less rainfall than more tropical areas where there are more epiphytic orchids, some of which have larger leaves and flowers.
Yeah - it's a motion piece shot in monochromatic near-infrared looking at coastal land/sea/sky scapes ... kind of a coastal follow up to our 'Brindabellas | Edge of Light" film. brindabellas.com.au Been in the 'pipeline' for over a decade now but finally looking to move it along this year
Yep Parsons Bands - I usually see them near Braidwood in NSW in autumn - also near Mallacoota in late summer / early autumn. Agree on the Diuris and Caladenias - wasn't as many out in East Gippsland this year with a dry start to spring but still saw some nice ones :)
Yep those are Eriochilus - Bunny orchids. They often flower in autumn - although in some places they can be out as early as January. The good thing about terrestrial orchids in SE AUS is there are species that flower in all four seasons - not just in spring :)
Yep - Caladenia and Diuris orchids are generally amongst the first orchids out in spring - although can be a bit later at altitude.
Yeah this is one of the most commonly seen summer-flowering orchids in SE AUS - is the most common + widespread hyacincth orchid in VIC. Can often see them growing on the side of the road. Can flower right though to April in some locations.
Sure - that's a Rosy hyacinth orchid - Dipodium roseum. Nice photo :)
No definitely would be some out on the Mallacoota Rd which you spotted … I’ve had a few close encounters with largish animals (and a rogue rooster!) driving that road this yr so have been trying to focus more on the driving and less on spotting orchids in recent times ;)
I went in to Mallacoota yesterday as well (and drove back to Gipsy Point) but didn't spot any on the main road - then saw these ones right near Gipsy ;)
